Types of Artificial Intelligence with Examples [PDF]

In this article we are discussing different types of artificial intelligence in detail with examples.

Artificial Intelligence is the field of computer science dedicated to creating intelligent machines that can think and act like humans. It can do things that are considered “smart. The goal of AI is to be able to do things such as recognize patterns, solve complex problems, make decisions, understand languages, and more. AI improves the speed, accuracy, and effectiveness of human operations.

AI uses complex methods and algorithm to build machines that can make decisions on their own. Artificial Intelligence relies on machine learning and deep learning.

Within the broad field of AI, various sub fields like machine learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics work together to build intelligent systems capable of adapting and improving over time.

Types of Artificial Intelligence

Following are the different types of artificial intelligence:

  1. based on capabilities
    • Weak AI or Narrow AI
    • General AI
    • Super AI
  2. based on functionally of AI.
    • Reactive Machines
    • Limited Memory
    • Theory of mind
    • Self-awareness
Types of Artificial Intelligence

Now let’s understand these into detail

Based on capability

1. Weak AI or Narrow AI:

Narrow AI

Weak AI, also known as Narrow AI, refers to artificial intelligence systems that are designed and trained for a specific task or a narrow set of tasks. In which a learning algorithm is developed to perform a specific task, and any knowledge gained from performing that task will not automatically be applied to the other tasks.

Unlike General AI, which would possess the ability to understand, learn, and perform any intellectual task that a human being can, Weak AI is limited to the particular functions it has been programmed or trained for.

Narrow AI cannot perform beyond its field or limitation, as it is only trained for one specific task. As a result, it is often known as weak AI. If narrow AI is allowed to function for too long, it may fail in unexpected ways.

In the context of Weak AI, the term “weak” doesn’t imply a lack of capability or effectiveness within its designated task. Instead, it emphasizes the specific and focused nature of the AI system.

These systems showcase remarkable proficiency in executing well-defined tasks, and they can often surpass human performance within those specific It is capable of performing “smart” functions. boundaries. However, what sets them apart is their inability to extend their understanding and capabilities beyond the predefined tasks. Unlike humans, who possess a broad range of cognitive abilities and can adapt to various situations, Weak AI systems operate within their designated domain without the broader comprehension that characterizes human intelligence.

Following are the some examples of weak AI.

Digital Voice Assistants

Voice-activated personal assistants like Siri (Apple), Alexa (Amazon), and Google Assistant (Google) are designed to perform specific tasks such as setting reminders, answering questions, or providing weather updates.

Recommendation engines

It is used by platforms like Netflix and Amazon. These systems analyze user behavior, preferences, and historical data to provide personalized suggestions by offering you helpful advice about what you else you might be interested in.

Image and Speech Recognition

Applications that excel in recognizing and processing images or speech fall into the category of Narrow AI. For instance, facial recognition technology in social media platforms, speech-to-text applications, and image recognition tools used in security systems.

Chatbots

Many websites and customer support services employ chatbots to handle specific queries or tasks. These bots are designed to understand and respond to user input within a predefined context.

Autonomous vehicles

AI that enables vehicles to run without a human driver is considered weak AI.

2. General AI:

General AI

General AI is a type of intelligence capable of doing any intellectual work as efficiently as a person. It has the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks – similar to the cognitive abilities of a human being.

The goal of general artificial intelligence is to create a system that is capable of thinking like a person on its own.

The concept of General AI involves creating machines or systems with the capacity for abstract reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and learning in a manner that goes beyond predefined domains.

General AI remains a theoretical concept, and building such a system poses significant scientific, technological, and ethical challenges. Currently, no system exists that could fall under general artificial intelligence and perform any task as well as a human.

Global researchers have begun to focus on building robots with general AI.

Systems with general AI are still being researched, and developing such systems will require major effort and time.

3. Super AI:

Super AI

Super AI is a level of Intelligence of System at which machine could surpass human intelligence, and can perform any task better than human with cognitive properties. It is an outgrowth of general AI.

Some key characteristics of strong AI include capability include the ability to think, to reason, solve the puzzle, make judgment, plan, learn, and communicate by its own.

Super AI is still a hypothetical concept of Artificial Intelligence. It is still a world-changing task to develop such systems in the real world.

Based on functionality

Reactive Machines

The most fundamental type of Artificial Intelligence is pure reactive machines. Such AI system do not store memories or past experience for future actions. That means They provide the same output for a given input and do not learn or adapt over time.

These machines simply consider the situations that exist right now and respond to them in the best way possible. The IBM Deep Blue system is an example of a reactive machine. Google’s AlphaGo is also an example of reactive machine.

Limited Memory

Limited memory machines can store past experience or some data for a short period of time. These machine can use stored data for a limited time period only. Self-driving car are one of the best example of Limited Memory system. These cars can, the distance of other cars, speed limit, and other information to navigate the road.

Theory of mind

An AI built with a theory of mind should be able to understand human emotions, people, beliefs, and be able to interact socially as humans do. This type of AI machines are still not developed, but researchers are making lots of efforts and improvement for developing such AI machine.

Self-awareness

Self-awareness AI is the future of artificial intelligence. It will be possible for these machines to possess consciousness, sentiments, and self-awareness, and they will be super intelligent in general. This machine will be smarter than human mind.

Self-awareness artificial intelligence is only a theory and does not yet exist in reality.

Conclusion

Artificial intelligence has the potential to transform all organization. Depending on your organization, this transformation may happen differently, but following the steps outlined in the previous chapter, you can implement and excel at using AI technology.

Our future is guided by AI, which can make our decisions more informed by understanding our world through data and computers. These computer of the future will understand not why the switches need to be turned on.
